Glacier Homemade Ice Cream has been voted the best ice cream in Boulder by both readers of the Daily Camera, Colorado Daily, & Boulder Weekly. We recently were voted best icecream in the Denver metro area by 5280 magazine. Our only competition is ourselves. We constantly strive to provide the best product and an enjoyable experience to our customers. We are not happy unless our customers are happy.

Eating ice cream used to be simple. You’d go to the store and buy a pint, or maybe get a cone at your favorite creamery, and you never thought to check the label for ingredients because you knew what you were eating was pure and natural. Today, it’s much more difficult to have that same peace of mind. While the rows of containers promise ecstasy in the form of mudslide-this or crunch-that, you can’t help but notice that the ingredients list is longer than the average high school history paper. And, while Boulder County residents are the most educated in the nation, even we have difficulty reading the list of chemicals that fill that tub of French Vanilla you just bought. Luckily for us, Glacier Homemade Ice Cream & Gelato still does things the old fashioned way.

Instead of using chemicals cooked up in a laboratory, the folks at Glacier mix the freshest ingredients: hand-squeezed citrus fruits, homemade chocolate and fudge to create the best ice cream in America. And with more than 80 flavors on display in any Glacier store at any time, it’s unlikely you’ll ever be without choices. If 80 isn’t a big enough number for you, then remember that Glacier has mixed more than 800 varieties of ice cream and gelato and continues to produce new flavors every two weeks. You can enjoy these Glacier treats in the store or, if you buy one (or two, or three) of the pint-sized containers, in the comfort of your own home. And since ice cream is nearly everyone’s favorite dessert -Americans consume about 1.55 billion gallons of the stuff annually — you’ll be glad to know that Glacier offers catering services for weddings, parties and corporate events. But whatever you do, don’t settle for substandard chemical ice cream ever again. Now that you know where to go, you have no excuse.

When we want a cool treat, Boulder County says Glacier Home Made Ice Cream is Hot, Hot, Hot! Since the beginning, the folks at Glacier have made more than 500 flavors of its premium ice cream, gelato, sorbet and low-fat yogurt. With full production facilities in house, the staff is always trying something new.
The secret to Glacier’s success is in its ingredients, says Victor Alcantar, head of production at the 28th Street store. “Good quality isn’t cheap,” he says. “We go all over the world to find the best of everything.”
Favorite flavors include the seasonal Fresh Peach (get it while it lasts!), Toffee Caramel Crunch and Death by Chocolate. No matter the flavor, people can’t seem to get enough. Alcantar says he makes 80 to 90 three-pound tubs every week, just for the 28th Street store. Need to chill out with something sweet? Gotta go to Glacier!

Asked why Glacier Home Made Ice Cream is so popular, manager Kathy Giansiracusa explains, "We're a small company that started in Boulder, we try to bring the Boulder atmosphere into each of our stores and we tailer our ice cream to [the tastes of] our customers."  Those tastes vary from Black Raspberry Chocolate Melt to the new cherry-lime gelato.  (Customers ice-cream cakes can be pre-ordered.)  The newest shop on Baseline Road features a coffee bar and free wireless Internet, making it a great place to hang out.  "We make every single product inside our store, we have our own machines, so [the different flavors] are freshly made every day."  Clearly the people at Glacier aren't afraid to play with their food.

Cool news from Glacier owner, Mark Mallen: His third store is in the works, slated to be the largest ice cream/gelato emporium in Colorado. Watch for it this fall, on the corner of Baseline Road and Foothills Parkway. Meanwhile, join Glacier's happy customers and choose from 60 flavors of ice cream and 24 kinds of gelato, which is softer than ice cream, with half the fat and all the great fresh flavors Glacier is known for - like peach, cantaloupe, blueberry and about 10 kinds of chocolate. Calorie counters can splurge on low-fat yogurt or nonfat sorbet (the French choc;late sorbet is bliss). Why is Glacier voted Number 1 year after year? "We try to make the finest quality ice cream and gelato - the best in the country. We use the highest quality ingredients," Mallen says. Peter Arendsen, new co-owner of the College Avenue branch, agrees, and he adds, "People like coming in the stores. Even if they're not happy when they come in, they are guaranteed to be happy by the time they leave."

Glacier is like a fine restaurant, creating just about everything from scratch. They make their own caramel and hot fudge sauces. For their seasonal fresh peach ice cream, the two Boulder stores process about 1,000 pounds of fresh Colorado peaches. The raspberry ice cream started with fresh raspberries. Even the whipped cream is freshly made. The 28th Street store has a new line of fresh gelatos, which are not as creamy as ice cream; tiramisu and chocolate hazelnut are knockouts. Owner Mark Mallen says, "We use the best ingredients and have made over 300 flavors. Almost every week we introduce another flavor." Ruth Templeton, co-owner of the College Avenue branch, also sells wheatgrass juice to health-conscious locals, who may follow it up with a chaser of ice cream. Fresh fruit smoothies and ice cream cakes, non-dairy sorbets and low-fat yogurt round out the repertoire.

In ice cream land, there are no losers. Only winners. According to our voters, however, the cream of the crop of ice cream shops is Glacier. Here's the scoop: Each of Glacier's over 150 ice cream, sorbet and soy cream flavors is carefully hand-crafted from the freshest ingredients by Mark Mallen, Glacier's founder, Ruth Templeton, co-owner of the College Avenue location, and their dedicated employees. They also have 20 varieties of smoothies made from fresh sorbet and ice cream. Sure, you can order the old standbys here, but Glacier is famed for its more adventurous flavors like Death by Chocolate, Coffee Carmel Crunch, Fresh Peach and Chai. With about 70 delicious selections to choose from every day, can you really go wrong?

Everyone loves ice cream, and in Boulder everyone loves Glacier Homemade Ice Cream. It might be the 80 flavors, or it might be all the yummy stuff you get mixed into your creamy treat. Or maybe it's the fact that the servers don't sing those stupid songs like Cold Stone Creamery. Whether you like the simplicity of vanilla or want green tea ice cream full of Snickers bits, they've got your ice cream craving covered. They also have fat-free frozen yogurt for the hard-core health nut.

Boulder might be the healthiest city in the nation, but man (and woman) cannot live on tofu alone. When it comes to dessert, they flock en masse to Glacier Homemade Ice Cream. Glacier offers more than 80 flavors of creamy, cold stuff that can be enjoyed alone or mixed with your favorite ingredients, such as chocolate chips and marshmallows. For those who need a treat but are feeling a bit more health conscience, Glacier provides a variety of low-fat yogurts to choose from.

For the third year running, Glacier Homemade Ice Cream is still No. 1. And the best just got better. Glacier now has three conveniently located Boulder locations. Their newest store on Baseline has added a coffee shop and teahouse to the scorecard, making this once-close category into a blowout. Whether you're looking for a mug of tea, a little straight-off-the-streets-of-Italy gelato, or a place to watch Oprah in the afternoons, Glacier has got you covered. But even more importantly, Glacier has the best ice cream, hands down. From traditional chocolate and vanilla to green tea or prickly pear gelato, they have something for everyone. And, of course, all ice cream is fresh and made from scratch. While it may be moving to the FlatIrons Shopping Center, Cold Stone Creamery continues to be a local favorite. At Cold Stone, you can mix piecrust and strawberries into cheesecake ice cream for the culinary equivalent of mom's homemade specialty.

The best dessert category has been arguably the most controversial in the history of B.O.B. That's because we just couldn't handle having to give the award to a certain metaphor for the advancing corporatization of our town, located at the NE corner of Pearl and 14th. In a town with so many amazing dessert options, we considered this cookie cutter institution (indeed, the word "factory" is part of its name) beneath the award—as well as unworthy for a city that prides itself on its uniqueness. Enter Glacier Homemade Ice Cream, a local business that has captured the hearts of a community that insists on only the best. And Glacier just got even better. After winning us over at its flagship location on N. 28th Street, and then at its second location on University Hill, Mark Mallen and Co. have broken the mold with a third location at the Meadows Shopping Center at the former location of the Healthy Habits salad bar. The newest, spiffiest Glacier is more than an ice cream shop, with a full service coffee and tea bar, featuring Amante coffee. Now you can stop by on your way to work for a latté and bring the kids over after dinner for a Stracciatella (Chocolate flakes added to a Madagascar vanilla infused gelato). What a concept! Last year, Mark Mallen and his Glacier Homemade Ice Cream store finally made it to the top of the B-dub heap when they claimed both staff and reader honors for Best Ice Cream in Boulder County. Consider 2005 Glacier's first successful defense of the title, as the locally owned and operated ice cream shop is once again No. 1 in the hearts and minds of Boulder. Glacier offers fresh, made-from-scratch ice cream in a mind-boggling array of traditional and creative flavors, like mango tea and blueberry zinfandel. Try their Death by Chocolate—truly a culinary orgasm. This year's runner-up, Cold Stone Creamery, is a longtime downtown favorite. Perfect for those hot summer days on the Mall, the Creamery is also a popular winter destination, as they make a mean ice cream chai. Ben & Jerry's, our honorable mention, is a favorite of both Boulderites and environmentally conscious liberals everywhere. In addition to scooping up great ice cream, they also add to the surrealism of downtown Boulder by sending employees clad in cow suits into the streets on hot Saturday afternoons.

The first and best-known law of marketing is this: The more times the name of your business is mentioned in Boulder Weekly the more success you will enjoy. Which brings us to the first corollary of this principle: Even negative publicity in the B-dub is good for your business. Keeping these maxims in mind, the following sentence is very carefully worded: Given the results of this year's B.O.B., it appears the honeymoon is over between the Boulder community and a certain corporate, undeserving former winner of the Best Dessert award, located at the NE corner of Pearl and 14th. Hallelujah! Mark Mallen is serious about creating the best ice cream in the world. And clearly he’s succeeding. Once the undisputed domain of Ben & Jerry’s, Mark’s Glacier Homemade Ice Cream has been steadily climbing the BOB poll, having reached the zenith for the first time this year. We’re betting on a long run. Not only has Glacier opened a second location on the Hill, Mark scored an incredible coup recently when he won the contract for a location in a new Whole Foods Market opening in Colorado Springs. Even more impressive than the rich taste of Glacier is the way Mark maintains his chiseled physique in the presence of all that yummy ice cream. The two guys from Vermont look like they’ve been indulging shamelessly for years; Mark looks like he’s never touched the stuff, thereby making a solid case for his own product in this health-conscious town.
